My name is Rebekah Phillips and I am a second year PSEO student at ARCC in Cambridge. I do not have any real experience with journalism, but it greatly interests me and I am excited to learn more about it in this class. I've grown up in a family of 9, not counting my parents. I have 5 brothers and 3 sisters. I am the second youngest in my family, so I am sort of at the end of the group.
Some of my interests include sports, outdoor activities, spending time with friends, playing the piano, being around family, youth group, and music. One of the highlights of my summer this year was that I had the chance to go on a missions trip to Mexico with my church youth group. It was one of the best trips I have ever been on and I learned a lot from it. While I was there I was very enticed by the people and the way that they live. We stayed in Matamoras, Mexico which was definitely on the poorer end of Mexico, so it was very humbling to see how they lived with having little water and very small houses made out of brick. It was a life changing experience for me and I encourage anyone who has been interested in going on such a trip to do so.
I have many friends who blog, but this is my first time doing so. I look forward to learning more about journalism and also getting to know my classmates through their blogs.

That is so awesome that you got to go to Mexico this summer! In the summer of 2007 and 2008 I got to go down to Ensenada, MX on missions trips and they are some of the best experiences i've ever had, and I agree, it really is humbling.
ReplyDeleteThat is cool that u went to Mexico! Especially as a mission trip. I always wanted to go somewhere with my church for a mission trip. I was actually very close to going to Russia to help in an orphanage for a couple months. I wish i did now.
ReplyDeleteHey! Sounds like you had a fabulous time in Mexico! I've been on six mission trips myself, my first time was to Mexico actually, working with the homeless and poor. It was phenomenal. I've also been to Peru twice, New Zealand, Texas & Maryland. They are the most life-changing experiences I've ever had. Every trip was always more revolutionary than the last. I used to live for those trips every summer. Last summer instead of a missions trip, I was a camp counselor instead and that was incredible as well! This is the first summer I wasn't able to do something like that because of my job, and it was hard having to let that go.
ReplyDeleteIt's neat to see other people who share the same faith & passion of sharing the gospel as me - I liked reading the comments above mine. This will be exciting!
Travel does have such a way of broadening your viewpoints, doesn't it? Missions trips do that and more as you're able to dig in and help the place where you are visiting. It's wonderful to read that several of you in this class have done such a thing. I am thrilled when I hear about people volunteering. Some will tell you that journalists shouldn't get involved in the community where they work. I don't believe that. I think that by getting involved it shows the people in your community that you care. Plus, you're able to fashion friendships which may later enrich your work as a writer through story tips and source lists. It looks like you'll have much to add to this class, Rebekah.
ReplyDeleteThat is so awesome that you were able to go on a missions trip this summer. It sounds like you had a great time. I have always wanted to go on one. Next summer my youth group might be going on one to Costa Rica. :)
