Bedtimes for children are not only beneficial to their parents.
Studies show that creating and enforcing bedtimes for children can have both long and short term, positive repercussions in health and cognitive development. Researchers have found that children who have not had set bedtimes in the past often have improved moods after beginning more regular sleeping times. -CNN.com

From personal experience I would have to agree with this article. I have seen major changes in behavior when children get a sufficient amount of sleep and going to sleep earlier. Children need structure and stability. Set bedtimes is one way to enforce the structure.
ReplyDeleteI can definitely relate to this myself. When I was younger, I didn't really have set bed times. When I started PSEO and became a lot more independent, I made it a point for myself to get to bed at a certain time, and the effects were great.
ReplyDeleteI've always had a set bedtime. It was eight o'clock for the longest time, until my brother and I convinced our mother to put it to eight thirty. From there, it has progressed every few years until it is now 10 o'clock. I rarely sleep then, however. My English teacher told me once that there have been studies that show teenagers are biologically supposed to go to sleep later and wake up later. We had been talking about persuasive essays and she told us that she would only allow someone to do one on getting school to start later if they had a valid argument for it, research into that would be acceptable. I thought that was interesting. I, myself, would love to go to school at, say, 10 o'clock and go until five, plus I think I'd do much better if I wasn't so tired all the time.
ReplyDeleteI would have to agree with article. I think many kids these days don't have set bedtimes. I believe that getting enough sleep (especially when your a child) is crucial to proper development. Even as an adult they say that you should get at least eight hours of sleep a night. However, I believe most people don't get this much sleep a night; I know I don't. Just think most of us aren't reaching our full potential just because we aren't receiving enough sleep each night. It seems like it would be an easy problem to fix, but for most Americans there isn't enough hours in the day!
ReplyDeleteThis is really interesting! I relate because my mother read to me every night and I plan on doing that with my kids. In our society it's easy to let your child fall asleep with the TV on, but this article really puts things in perspective.
